Senior Principal, Urban Wildlife Virtual Req #1196 The general salary range for this position is $79,600-$119,400. Salary offers will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, skills, training and education. Humane World for Animals, global leader in animal advocacy and protection, is seeking a Senior Principal, Urban Wildlife for the Wildlife department. The primary purpose of this position is to promote and advance the use of humane, integrated, innovative non-lethal approaches to conflicts with wildlife. This includes providing technical advice and training on the implementation of humane protocols, policies, and procedures; and directing and collaborating on new and existing projects that evaluate and improve management responses to wildlife conflicts. Responsibilities: • Collaborates with animal care and control professionals and agencies and helps them incorporate humane policies and procedures related to wildlife call-taking and field response. Identifies gaps in training and resources while promoting our Wild Neighbors pledge program. Helps direct our Shelter Mentorship Program, including coordinating mentor relationships with animal control agencies, conducting site visits and trainings, and providing oversight and guidance to mentee partners; • Develops and leads trainings and webinars on awareness and approaches to community wildlife issues, including humane animal handling techniques. Helps with the creation and editing of wildlife conflict resolution resources including fact sheets, instructional videos, technical guides, standard operating procedures, and other materials; • Spearheads the formation of a working group of shelter and animal care and control leaders (and relevant community wildlife response stakeholders) to increase the adoption and implementation of humane and effective wildlife responses within the profession, share innovations in the field of humane wildlife conflict resolution, and help develop durable standards for response at the community level; • Keeps abreast of developments and initiatives involving innovative techniques for humanely responding to conflicts with wildlife; analyzes scientific data to support best practices; and makes recommendations on which tools and techniques the organization should promote to animal care and control professionals; • Advises communities in the design and implementation of humane wildlife conflict resolution policies and programs at the community level, including consulting with mayors, city councils, city managers, agency leads, and other community leaders to develop, pass, and implement humane wildlife management plans and policies; • Sustains and enhances the organization’s reputation as a leader and influencer in the humane management of conflicts with urban wildlife and cultivates and maintains a network of key stakeholders. Represents and promotes the Wild Neighbors pledge, program, and resources at conferences, workshops, meetings, and other outreach opportunities to increase exposure and advance programmatic and policy goals; • Provides wildlife conflict resolution advice and information to donors, advocates, and internal and external contacts and represents the organization in the media for a variety of humane wildlife conflict resolution issues; • Provides general support, as needed, on wildlife conflict resolution issues for the department and organization; • Acts as a field team member or team leader on organization’s wildlife field projects, as needed; • Performs other duties or responsibilities, as assigned. Qualifications and Requirements: • Bachelor’s degree in zoology, biology, wildlife conservation, animal behavior or equivalent work experience required; • A minimum of five (5) years of work experience in animal care and control, animal damage management, or related field required; • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in wildlife capture and handling; five (5) years preferred; • Experience in animal care and control setting strongly preferred; • Experience in public speaking and media relations preferred; • Thorough knowledge of humane wildlife conflict resolution techniques; • Animal handling skills and the ability to handle animals under stress; • Ability to manage issues requiring problem resolution and conflict management with excellent interpersonal and intervention skills; • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook); • Willingness and ability to travel and to work outside the scope of normal business hours; • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines; high energy, self-motivated and proactive; • Ability to multitask and be flexible with regard to workload and assignments; • Ability to exercise sound judgment; • Strong written and verbal communication skills; • Attention to detail and commitment to excellence demonstrated by the delivery of quality and timely outcomes; • Ability to work both independently and as an effective team member in a team environment; • Strong interest wildlife protection issues preferred.
